vessels: manifold (2019)
Macro photographs of the stems of clay mariners’ pipes recovered from the seafloor of Halifax Harbour (Nova Scotia) and the open Atlantic by local citizen historians and divers.
The artifacts date back to the 17th Century, and have been marked by the handling of the sea, as well as bodies long since past: indentations for fingers and teeth, inscriptions reflecting citizenship, home port, faith, and superstition.
An archive and typology of everyday artifacts related to seafaring culture which ruminates on the ways time and human action are inscribed onto the surfaces of such objects, acting as a kind of “material memory” connecting bodies both past and present (Dimensions: 12x12 inches. Framed archival inkjet prints).
