Ab-solutes: lake erie (2020 / 2021)
Photographs of hydrocarbon formations collected along the western shoreline of Point Pelee peninsula of Lake Erie.
Title of series refers to what theorist Hent de Vries calls the “absolute” or “that which refuses to dissolve completely into the milieu of human knowledge”. The images also engage with Baruch Spinoza’s idea of “conatus” which recognizes the irreducibility of matter and the tendency of things to persist - gesturing toward the imperative that we - as individuals and societies - must be more conscious of the future reverberations of our material legacies (i.e. the things we leave in our wake).
